James Mooney
James Mooney draws people caught mid-thought: eyes closed, head tipped back, a cigarette held a moment too long. He works in charcoal, chalk and pastel, building faces out of smudge and erasure and leaving the working in view, from taped corners and stray marks to notes scrawled in the margins. The palette stays mostly smoke and bone, broken by flashes of yellow: a crown of flowers, a blaze of ochre, a glass of champagne. Every drawing here is an original, made by hand in the studio. Once it's gone, it's gone.
